Westerville • March 7, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. The familiar whir of tiny paws racing across the floor is about to reach Olympic proportions this weekend. The Columbus Pet Expo is unleashing its Wiener Dog Olympics at the Ohio Expo Center, where dachshunds dressed as hot dogs will compete for glory while humans enjoy a weekend packed with entertainment options – from Shadowbox Live's rock tribute to COSI's Brew Festival featuring over 50 local breweries.
Meanwhile, culinary excitement is bubbling up in Old North Columbus as Chef Dennis Wang expands his popular Japanese bistro Oishii to a second location near OSU. The new spot promises the intimate charm of a neighborhood sushi bar with an impressive menu. In less appetizing news, hundreds of bricks tumbled from a Short North building on Monday, shattering a bus shelter below and temporarily closing nearby businesses – a stark reminder that even in our bustling city, sometimes things come crashing down.

🍣 Chef Dennis Wang brings Oishii to Old North Columbus with second location. The popular Japanese bistro, which opened in Powell in 2022, has expanded to a spot on North High Street near Ohio State University. Wang and his wife Brianna Velliquette, who met while working at Typhoon Asian Fusion Bistro, aim to create a "friendly, classy feel of a traditional Japanese neighborhood sushi bar." The menu features everything from sashimi to specialty rolls, plus appetizers and entrees, complemented by a bar stocked with soju, sake and cocktails. The new location takes over the 3,400-square-foot space previously occupied by Adelaide's Gin Joint.
🧱 Bricks tumble from Short North building, shattering bus stop below. Hundreds of bricks fell from an apartment building at High Street and W. 5th Avenue in Columbus on Monday, damaging a glass bus shelter. While no injuries were reported, the area was evacuated as a safety precaution. Local businesses, including Happy Little Treats vegan bakery, were forced to temporarily close after city officials blocked access to the building pending a safety investigation. The bakery announced on Instagram that they would remain closed until the building is deemed safe.
