๐Ÿ’ฐ Money moves

Westerville • March 6, 2025

โ€‹

Good morning, Westerville. Smart money moves are making waves across our community this week. Olentangy Local Schools just pulled off a financial masterstroke that will save taxpayers a whopping $3.1 million over the next decade through strategic bond refinancing. The district's newly earned AAA credit rating โ€“ the financial equivalent of a perfect SAT score โ€“ puts them in elite company and positions them for even more savings down the road.

Meanwhile, crucial decisions loom on the horizon as Genoa Township voters prepare to weigh in on a fire levy this May that could restore emergency response capabilities after recent cutbacks. And in a heartwarming display of mentorship, OSU educator Ty Hamilton recently inspired local 4-H youth with valuable livestock wisdom, passing along agricultural knowledge and life skills that will shape the next generation of community leaders.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Olentangy schools save taxpayers millions with smart bond move. The district's bond refunding will save nearly $3.1 million over the next decade by issuing new bonds at lower interest rates to replace older, higher-rate bonds. OLSD also earned the highest possible AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor's, highlighting the district's strong financial management and capacity to meet commitments. This prestigious rating will enable the district to secure lower borrowing costs in the future, further reducing taxpayer burdens. Superintendent Todd Meyer called the move "another example of how our district manages assets wisely."

๐Ÿ”ฅ Genoa Township voters to decide on crucial fire levy in May. The township's Board of Trustees unanimously approved placing a fire levy renewal and increase from 5.3 to 7.7 mills on the May 6 ballot. This comes after a previous fire levy failed in November, resulting in a spending freeze and elimination of overtime for the Fire Department, which has reduced emergency responses. The trustees also approved using American Rescue Plan funds before the December 31, 2024 deadline, allocating $387,000 for a ladder truck and $230,023 for Fire Department personnel. Other township business included rezoning approvals, infrastructure projects, and committee appointments.
