Good morning, Vinton County. For 162 years, the flame of freedom has burned brightly in southern Ohio through America's longest-running Emancipation Celebration. This year's event returns to Rio Grande on September 20-21, bringing history to life through powerful reenactments, including a recreated debate between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass portrayed by skilled living historians—a testament to our region's commitment to remembering pivotal moments in America's journey.

Meanwhile, Ohio's deer population management takes a strategic turn as the Department of Natural Resources announces lottery-based hunts across 22 counties for the 2025-2026 season. These controlled hunts aim to protect native plant communities in nature preserves while giving hunters unique opportunities. On the public health front, the Meigs County Health Department's successful accreditation journey offers a blueprint for maintaining essential services that support community wellbeing—from strategic planning to initiatives like Get Healthy Meigs! that address our region's most pressing health challenges.

🦌 Ohio offers special deer hunts to control overpopulation on nature preserves. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will hold lottery-based hunts across 22 counties during the 2025-2026 season, targeting areas where deer threaten native plant communities. Hunters must attend mandatory meetings and purchase $5 lottery tickets for each preserve they wish to hunt. Most locations will offer archery hunts, while Lake Katharine, Boch Hollow, and Stage's Pond preserves will also permit gun and muzzleloader hunts. Some hunts require harvesting an antlerless deer before taking an antlered one to help manage populations effectively.

🏥 Ohio health departments must achieve national accreditation to operate. The Meigs County Health Department (MCHD) earned this status in 2022 and is working toward reaccreditation in 2027. Accreditation ensures health departments maintain foundational capabilities to support public health protections and achieve equitable outcomes. Key accreditation processes include performance management, community health planning, strategic planning, workforce development, and consistent branding. These standards have led to growth in MCHD's staff, programming, and community impact through initiatives like Get Healthy Meigs!, which addresses physical activity, mental health, and access to care.
