🛣️ Detour dilemma

Union County • October 7, 2025

Good morning, Union County. At 101 years old, Ann B. Walker's legacy as a trailblazing journalist represents a remarkable chapter in Ohio's history. As the first woman and Black broadcaster to cover the Ohio State House, Walker didn't just report the news—she made it, deliberately creating pathways for underrepresented voices while fighting for equal pay across her distinguished career that ultimately led to the White House under President Carter.

Closer to home, Newark's dining scene continues its evolution as Mariposa Mexican Restaurant serves its final tacos, making way for the upcoming Stockyard Grill concept. Meanwhile, motorists should brace for a transportation obstacle course as multiple major road closures hit the county this weekend, including U.S. 42 shutdowns and the ongoing State Route 736 bridge rehabilitation. Be sure to plan alternative routes—these detours aren't disappearing anytime soon.

🎙️ A trailblazing Black journalist broke barriers in Ohio for decades. Ann B. Walker, who died at 101, made history as the first woman and Black broadcaster to cover the Ohio State House and Columbus City Council. Throughout her career spanning print and broadcast journalism, Walker fought for equal pay and deliberately opened doors for underrepresented talent. She worked for multiple news outlets before joining President Jimmy Carter's administration, which she considered her favorite role. Walker was recently honored with an Ohio Valley Emmy for lifetime achievement, recognizing her pioneering contributions to journalism.

🌮 Newark's Mariposa Mexican restaurant closes after recent ownership change. The eatery, located on North 3rd Street, served its final customers on Saturday following its sale by Square Roots Restaurant Group earlier this year. According to a social media announcement, a new concept called Stockyard Grill will take over the space. Details about Stockyard Grill's opening timeline and menu offerings remain unclear, as the new owner couldn't be reached for comment. The transition marks another change in Newark's evolving dining scene.
