Good morning, Union County. Summer 2025 is shaping up to be a season of meaningful connections across our community. Young anglers have a special opportunity to reel in both fishing skills and spiritual wisdom at the upcoming "Hooked on Jesus" event, where children ages 6-12 will not only learn to cast lines but will also take home their very own fishing equipment. Pre-registration is required for this free experience that promises to create lasting memories at Romans 1:20 Christian Retreat's stocked ponds.
The healing power of shared experiences shines at Camp Braveheart, where over 50 grieving children find comfort through adventure activities and the understanding that it's both "OK to cry" and "OK to laugh." Meanwhile, our community honors the quiet dignity of Marine veteran Gene VanHoose, whose 20 years of military service and decades as a skilled carpenter left an enduring legacy before his peaceful passing earlier this month.

🎣 Free "Hooked on Jesus" youth fishing event promises faith and fun. Children ages 6-12 can join the August 9, 2025 event at Romans 1:20 Christian Retreat in West Mansfield, Ohio. Participants will rotate through stations learning fishing skills while hearing an inspiring message about the "Fisher of Men." Every child receives a new fishing rod, reel, and lures before testing their skills at the retreat's stocked ponds. While free, pre-registration is required by emailing info@romans120.net.
🎖️ Marine veteran Gene VanHoose leaves behind a quiet legacy of service. The 88-year-old Master Sergeant dedicated 20 years to the Marine Corps before passing away peacefully on June 5th, 2025. After his military career, VanHoose worked as a self-employed carpenter since 1976 and cherished time outdoors with his family. Though proud of his service, he remained private about his medals and accomplishments. He is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Debbie, six bonus children, and numerous grandchildren who will gather to honor him with full military honors.
❤️ Camp Braveheart gives grieving children a place to heal together. Hosted annually at Marmon Valley Farm, the free camp welcomed over 50 children aged 6-13 who have lost family members. Participants enjoy horseback riding, paddle boating, rock climbing and other activities while connecting with peers who understand their grief. The camp's philosophy emphasizes that it's both "OK to cry" and "OK to laugh" during the healing process. Supported by Universal Home Health and Hospice, Otterbein Senior Life, and United Way, Camp Braveheart helps children realize they aren't alone in their grief journey.
