Good morning, Union County. The silver screen under starlit skies once captivated our community when Dale Elleman Sr. opened Bellefontaine's drive-in theater back in 1948. For more than three decades, families enjoyed affordable entertainment from the comfort of their vehicles, complete with personal speakers and even car heaters for chilly evenings. While this nostalgic piece of local history closed its doors in the 1970s, its memory remains as vibrant as the 48x56-foot screen that once illuminated summer nights.

Speaking of summer celebrations, Central Ohio is gearing up for spectacular Independence Day festivities, with options spanning from late June through early July. And in a remarkable achievement that connects our community to the wider world, Benjamin Logan High School senior Winifred Bodin will soon immerse herself in Moroccan culture after winning a prestigious State Department scholarship to study Arabic abroad—proving that Union County talent continues to shine on the global stage.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🎬 Bellefontaine's drive-in theater brought movies under the stars for decades. Dale Elleman Sr. opened the innovative outdoor cinema in August 1948 on an eight-acre tract next to the Detroit Aluminum & Brass plant. The theater featured a massive 48x56-foot screen, individual car speakers with volume controls, and even car heaters for cold weather. With space for 350 vehicles, affordable admission (50 cents for adults, free for children under twelve), and amenities like a central refreshment stand and "moonlight effect" lighting, the drive-in encouraged families to "come as you are." After more than thirty successful years of operation, the beloved Bellefontaine Drive-in Theatre finally closed its doors in the 1970s.
