Good morning, Union County. A powerful tribute to service and sacrifice is taking shape near Mary Rutan Park, where local veterans broke ground Sunday on a new monument honoring military service. The $45,000 project is nearing its fundraising goal but still needs community support to create this lasting place of reflection. Meanwhile, history is unfolding at the Columbus Zoo where two elephants—matriarch Phoebe and first-time mom Sunny—are simultaneously expecting calves, a significant development for the endangered Asian elephant population.

In a stark reminder of ongoing public safety efforts, two human traffickers received life sentences for their brutal crimes, following an investigation by the Central Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force. James Dukes-Johnson and Michael Davis won't be eligible for parole for 96 and 81 years respectively, while four co-defendants, including a Marysville resident, await sentencing after pleading guilty to related charges.

🇺🇸 Local veterans break ground on monument honoring military service. The Veteran Monument Project launched Sunday with a groundbreaking ceremony near Mary Rutan Park in Bellefontaine. The initiative aims to raise $45,000 for a permanent memorial that will serve as a place of reflection and remembrance for veterans, families, and community members. Project coordinator David Lamb reports fundraising is nearing its goal but still needs additional community support. Donations can be made via Venmo or directly at Richwood Bank to help create this lasting tribute.

🐘 Two Columbus Zoo elephants are pregnant at the same time. This historic first for the zoo involves matriarch Phoebe (due in fall) and first-time mom Sunny (due by August), both carrying calves fathered by Sabu from Cincinnati Zoo. The pregnancies are significant for the endangered Asian elephant species, which faces unsustainable population numbers in accredited zoos. These calves will make additional history as the first at Columbus to be vaccinated against elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, the leading cause of death among zoo elephants. Keepers are optimistic that experienced mother Phoebe will help guide Sunny through her first pregnancy.
