Good morning, Summit County. Akron's healthcare landscape just got a major upgrade with Akron Children's unveiling its impressive new Medina Health Center. The sprawling 28,900 square-foot facility brings together pediatric primary care, specialty services, and rehabilitation under one roof—consolidating three previous locations into a single, family-friendly destination. Parents can explore this modern marvel themselves at the open house on April 26, complete with refreshments and activities for the little ones.

The arts are thriving across our region this spring. YSU professor Dragana Crnjak's distinctive artwork is turning heads at the University of Akron's "Reflections" exhibition, with art enthusiasts invited to meet her at the April 10 reception. Meanwhile, Akron's 200th birthday celebration hits a high note with Tuesday Musical's commissioned "Festival Fanfare" premiering April 22 at E.J. Thomas Hall, performed by Cleveland Orchestra brass and percussion sections for a truly momentous occasion.

🏥 Akron Children's unveils spacious new Medina Health Center. The 28,900 square-foot facility consolidates three previous locations into one destination at 3778 Medina Road. Designed with families in mind, the center offers pediatric primary care, specialty services, and rehabilitation under one roof in a modern environment. The two-level facility houses five pediatricians on the first floor and 20 pediatric specialists on the second, with a Quick Care service launching this fall. Community members can tour the new center at an open house on April 26 featuring refreshments, activities, and giveaways.

🎨 YSU professor showcases distinctive artwork in prestigious "Reflections" exhibition. Dragana Crnjak's work is currently featured at the University of Akron's Emily Davis Gallery alongside other accomplished artists. The exhibition includes nine of her pieces, with three of her most recent paintings demonstrating her technical mastery and conceptual depth. Art enthusiasts can meet Crnjak at the public reception on April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m., gaining insights into her creative process and inspiration. 🎵 Akron's 200th birthday gets a musical gift from Tuesday Musical. The nonprofit Tuesday Musical Association is premiering a commissioned piece called "Festival Fanfare (For Akron's Bicentennial)" during a special concert on April 22. Brass and percussion sections of The Cleveland Orchestra, led by principal trumpet Michael Sachs, will perform the new work by California composer Peter Boyer. The piece will be recorded for future Akron civic events, and concertgoers at E.J. Thomas Hall will also enjoy classics like Moussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Grainger's "Lincolnshire Posy."

Lisa Ann Owen, 63, passed away at home in Akron, Ohio on April 8, 2025. Born to George and Mona Owen in 1961, Lisa was a Firestone High School and University of Akron graduate who worked in banking for many years. She is survived by her three sisters and numerous nieces and nephews whom she lovingly called her "15 smoochie kids" and was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, a nephew, and a niece. Lisa enjoyed cross stitching, scrapbooking, puzzles, and watching soap operas, with funeral services to be held April 25-26, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery on May 3.

Frank Joseph Taormina

Frank "Frankie" Joseph Taormina, II, a 54-year-old Akron native and Garfield High School graduate, passed away unexpectedly on April 11, 2025. Known for his infectious laugh and smile, Frankie was beloved by many and is survived by his wife Katie, three children, his parents, siblings, and extended family. Friends may pay respects on April 16 from 10AM to 1PM at Anthony Funeral Homes in Akron, followed by a funeral service officiated by Fr. Bill Hritsko and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Josephine Hanson, 75, passed away on April 11, 2025, at her home in Barberton, Ohio. A devoted Jehovah's Witness since 1968, she found great comfort in her religious faith. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Tore, as well as her siblings, daughters, and grandchildren. Josephine was known for her generous spirit, keen mind, and love of puzzles, as well as her talent for mending both physical items and relationships.

Gail L. Payne, 78, passed away on April 13, 2025, after a career as an Insurance Agent. She was known for her love of reading, shopping, animals, and her bright smile and sense of humor that uplifted her family during difficult times. Gail shared a special bond with her grandchildren, particularly Cory and Cameron. She is survived by her daughters Teri and Lori, son Gary, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, her two dogs, and numerous relatives and friends, while being preceded in death by her parents and husband Gary D. Wilson.

Gerald G. "Woody" Woods

Gerald G. Woods Sr., 71, passed away on April 7, 2022, surrounded by his family after battling for 8.5 years following a paralyzing accident. Born in 1950 in West Virginia, Gerald was known for his strong faith, love of family, and passion for vehicles, having built numerous cars, motorcycles, and a custom V-8 trike. He worked at Ken-Tool Manufacturing for over 40 years and is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith, along with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and brothers. Gerald was preceded in death by his son Michael, infant grandson Gerald III, parents, and two siblings.

Barbara Ruth Boettler, 84, passed away on April 12, 2025, after being born in New Jersey in 1941. She worked as a driver license examiner for the State of Ohio and was known for her kindness and loving nature. She is survived by her daughters, siblings, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, while being preceded in death by her husband David, twin brother, two sons, and a great-grandson. A graveside service will be held on April 17, 2025, at Sunset Hills Burial Park Chapel in Canton, Ohio.

Dawn Lazerne Moeller, 97, passed away on April 5th, 2025, after battling dementia. Born in Olympia, Washington, she spent seven years as a Dominican Sister before leaving to marry Ray Moeller, with whom she settled in Hudson, Ohio in 1968. Dawn earned psychology degrees from Kent State University but dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mother while pursuing passions for bridge, needlepoint, reading, and caring for cats. She is survived by her son Mark, grandchildren Maddie and Luke, and extended family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and friendship.

Carol Ann Ratcliff, 88, passed away on April 9, 2025, in Akron, Ohio, having been born on July 9, 1936, to Charles and Amy Barnby. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence (Gene) Ratcliff and son Charles (Chuck) Ratcliff. Carol is survived by her daughter Kim, son Chris, daughter-in-law Kelli, eight grandchildren, and multiple great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. As per her wishes, no formal service will be held, with arrangements handled by Adams Mason Funeral Home.

Carolyn Regina Pfeifer

Carolyn R. Pfeifer, 91, passed away on April 10, 2025, after being admitted to Akron City hospital with abdominal pain. Born in 1933 in Pennsylvania, she was known for her sweet nature, protective spirit, toughness, and quick wit, remaining active despite vision loss in her later years. Carolyn enjoyed the outdoors, planting flowers, and feeding birds, and maintained her adventurous spirit until her final days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, two children, and all ten of her siblings, and is survived by her daughter Linda, son Richard, daughter-in-law Sandy, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Richard A. Peper, 72, of Streetsboro, Ohio, passed away on April 13, 2025. He was the husband of Mary Peper, father of Andrew and Ryan, and brother of Lawrence Peper. Rick had a career at Boeing and Advanced Lighting Technologies, and enjoyed traveling with his family, hiking, home remodeling, photography, and model trains. A memorial gathering will be held on April 22, 2024, at Busch-Romito Funeral Home in Twinsburg, with suggested memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or National Park Foundation.

Thomas Charles Gates, 87, passed away on April 9, 2025, after being born in Harrisburg, PA in 1937 and later moving to Akron, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Dawn, but is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 3, 2025, in Akron, with memorial contributions suggested to the Whiskey Painters of America. Services are being handled by Billow Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Robert John "RJ" White, aged 72, passed away on April 9th, 2025, leaving behind his wife Patrice, five children, and two grandchildren. A proud military veteran, RJ embodied values of integrity and commitment throughout his life while maintaining an unwavering devotion to the Cleveland Browns. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, but is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and many extended family members and friends. In lieu of a formal service, the family requests contributions to the Parkinson's Foundation or The Michael J. Fox Foundation in his memory.

Knowledge Totten, a talented chef with over 35 years in the culinary arts, passed away on April 5, 2025, at age 91 in Columbus, Ohio after a brief battle with COPD. Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1933, he was known for his innovative recipes, musical talent with the harmonica, and passion for hands-on projects like fixing radios. Knowledge will be remembered for his humor, musical abilities, and his love of sharing meals with family and friends. He is survived by his siblings Aunt Liz and Orlando Totton, three daughters, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives, with funeral services scheduled for April 17-18, 2025, at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home.
