🌊 Dam dilemma

Summit County • March 19, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. Nature's drama is unfolding along the Cuyahoga River, where the ambitious $100 million Gorge Metro Park Dam removal project has hit an unexpected pause. This transformative undertaking—which would reveal the hidden "Big Falls" waterfall and create challenging rapids for adventurous kayakers—remains in limbo as federal infrastructure funding freezes. Meanwhile, the pages of the Akron Beacon Journal continue to showcase our community's diverse voices, from controversial proposals about policing to thoughtful reflections on education and seasonal time changes.

If you're looking to shake off the mid-March doldrums, Northeast Ohio's entertainment calendar is bursting with options. From tribute concerts honoring legends like Queen and Johnny Cash to theatrical productions of "Twelfth Night" and "She Kills Monsters," there's no shortage of cultural diversions. Don't miss family-friendly offerings like the Maple Sugar Festival or the chance to plan ahead for Eric Clapton's September appearance—proving once again that our region's cultural scene rivals its natural wonders.

🌊 Historic Cuyahoga River dam removal faces federal funding freeze. The $100 million project to dismantle the 57-foot-high Gorge Metro Park Dam has been paused due to President Trump's executive order halting infrastructure spending. Before the dam can be removed, nearly one million cubic yards of contaminated sediment must be dredged from the river—work that was to be funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. When completed, the project would restore natural water flow, improve wildlife habitat, reveal the hidden "Big Falls" waterfall, and create challenging rapids for kayakers east of the Mississippi.
