🏙️ Reimagining akron

Summit County • March 20, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. In the halls of justice, a somber chapter unfolds as Jeffery Peasley stands trial for the 2021 fatal shooting of Robert Zornes Jr. The proceedings before Judge Kelly McLaughlin represent just one of the significant developments reshaping our community landscape this week, alongside Akron University's ambitious plan to privatize student housing through a 40-year agreement that promises to address $83 million in maintenance backlog while keeping housing costs controlled.

Meanwhile, the concrete scars of urban renewal are being reimagined as Akron residents gather to envision a new future for the decommissioned Innerbelt highway. The community-driven process prioritizes affordable housing and accessible retail where once stood a thriving Black business district before 1970s highway construction. As design firm Sasaki incorporates feedback for the May master plan, these collective efforts represent our community's commitment to healing historical wounds while building toward a more inclusive tomorrow.

🏢 Akron University plans to hand off student housing to private companies. The 40-year agreement, expected to be finalized by December, would give the university a large upfront payment to address $83 million in deferred maintenance costs. Unlike the controversial parking outsourcing that sparked student outrage over increased fees, officials insist housing costs will remain controlled, requiring state approval for any increases. The deal with Capstone On-Campus Management and Radnor Property Group aims to be seamless for students while generating long-term revenue for the university. Current housing staff will transition as the management company takes over maintenance, custodial services, and front desk operations.

🏙️ Akron residents reimagine their city's decommissioned Innerbelt highway. At a public open house, community members prioritized affordable housing, accessible retail, and healthy food options for the redevelopment plan. The original highway construction in the 1970s displaced thousands of Black residents and destroyed a thriving Black business district. Residents are advocating for an African American history museum to commemorate what was lost, while urban design firm Sasaki works to incorporate community feedback despite uncertainty about a $10 million federal grant. The master plan options are expected by May, with additional public engagement sessions scheduled for April.
