🌱 Spring shoots sprouting

Summit County • March 18, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. As spring's first tender shoots emerge from the soil at Akron Cooperative Farms, a vibrant community of Bhutanese immigrants is already harvesting mustard greens from their greenhouses. This 4-acre urban oasis, transformed from a forgotten baseball field into "garden therapy" for 140 local growers, represents the beautiful intersection of cultural heritage and community resilience that flourishes in our North Hill neighborhood.

While some Summit County residents nurture the earth, others are nurturing safety this St. Patrick's Day weekend. The "Arrive Alive" program's free Lyft rides (code SUMMITGREEN25) stand ready to shepherd revelers home safely through March 18—part of an initiative that's already protected over 5,500 celebrants. Meanwhile, local entrepreneurs receive their own form of protection through a $90,000 grant bringing free financial counseling to small business owners, reinforcing Mayor Malik's belief that these ventures truly are "the heart of our community."

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🌱 Immigrant gardeners bring vibrant community farm to life in Akron. At Akron Cooperative Farms, Bhutanese immigrants are already harvesting mustard greens from greenhouses as spring approaches. The 4-acre community garden, founded in 2019 on a former baseball field, serves 140 gardeners who can eat or sell their produce. This year, the farm is introducing vermicomposting—using worms to enrich the soil—and plans to sell produce at local Nepali markets and farmers markets. Executive Director Doug Wurtz created the space specifically as "garden therapy" for immigrants in the North Hill neighborhood.
