🎬 Oscar homegrown

Summit County • March 4, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. Oscar history was made this week as Akron native Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for costume design. His groundbreaking achievement for "Wicked" caps a remarkable 35-year career that already includes Emmy and Tony awards. In his emotional acceptance speech, Tazewell acknowledged the weight of blazing a trail where he once had no one to follow—a powerful reminder that representation still matters, even in 2024.

While Hollywood celebrates one of our own, two local heroes are earning well-deserved recognition closer to home. New Franklin police officers Dan Kulcsar and Ethan Towell braved icy waters to rescue a woman from Turkeyfoot Lake in a dramatic scene captured on body cameras. Meanwhile, downtown Akron's commercial landscape gets a fresh chapter with Pleasant Valley Corp's $2.8 million purchase of the PNC Center—a "leap" that could signal renewed confidence in our urban core.
