🔎 Fugitive found

Summit County • March 3, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. The long arm of the law reached across state lines Thursday as U.S. marshals apprehended fugitive Dayshon Lewis in Akron, closing a chapter that began in West Virginia back in 2023. Like a game of cat and mouse that spanned 100 miles and multiple jurisdictions, this cross-state collaboration demonstrates how our region remains connected beyond just geographic proximity.

While law enforcement celebrates this win, uncertainty looms for local businesses caught in political crosscurrents. Representatives Sykes and Brown are sounding alarms about economic ripple effects from recent executive orders, even as Green City Council draws a firm line against cannabis businesses—despite 51% of local voters supporting legalization statewide. The unanimous ban creates an interesting paradox: a community divided on whether prohibition or voter preference should guide policy in our evolving social landscape.

🏛️ Trump's rapid policy changes create uncertainty for Akron-Canton businesses. Democratic Representatives Sykes and Brown warned local business leaders about the administration's sweeping executive orders at an Ohio Chamber of Commerce conference. They criticized the "manufactured crisis" of government efficiency efforts that freeze promised funding for community projects. The congresswomen expressed concerns about tariffs disrupting supply chains, potential Medicaid cuts threatening healthcare jobs, and dismantling of DEI programs. Meanwhile, Ohio legislators are grappling with workforce shortages and population decline that could deter business investment in the region.

🚫 Green City Council puts cannabis businesses on the banned list. The council unanimously approved legislation prohibiting adult-use cannabis operators within city limits, despite 51% of Green voters supporting legalization statewide. A companion measure aligning local law with state regulations on personal cultivation passed 4-1. Council Vice President Justin Speight cited concerns about negative community impacts, while resident Jane Weaver argued the ban contradicts voter will and unfairly treats cannabis differently than alcohol and vape products. The council also decided against requesting a hearing on a liquor license stock transfer for Legends Sports Pub and approved the city's 2024 Comprehensive Plan update.
