🔔 Safety first

Good morning, Stark County. Safety takes center stage this week as Canton firefighters launch a free smoke detector program for homeowners. The potentially life-saving devices are available at Fire Station No. 1 with proper identification—a simple step that could prevent tragedy. This old-school approach to community safety pairs nicely with the city's revival of traditional communication methods through the "Canton Connection" newsletter, set to arrive in 37,000 mailboxes later this month.

Meanwhile, change is coming to North Canton Schools as treasurer Tim Walker prepares to step into the superintendent role this July. The former college basketball coach will trade financial spreadsheets for leading 900 employees and 4,300 students with a $145,000 salary. Walker, a father of four, called the opportunity a "no-brainer," citing the district's strong community foundation—proving sometimes the best leadership candidates are already in the building.

🔥 Canton firefighters are giving away free smoke detectors to homeowners. City residents can pick up the life-saving devices at Fire Station No. 1 on Seventh Street SW, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Applicants must bring photo ID and proof of address such as a utility bill. The program specifically excludes landlords, focusing instead on helping individual homeowners improve safety in their residences. This initiative represents part of the fire department's ongoing efforts to prevent home fire tragedies in the Canton community.
