Stark County • April 16, 2025
Good morning, Stark County. Fresh starts are taking shape across the county as the Greater Stark County Urban League launches its groundbreaking expungement program, offering those with low-level convictions a path forward. By covering court fees, transportation costs, and providing free legal coordination, the initiative is removing barriers that often keep people tethered to past mistakes—especially timely as Ohio Senate Bill 288 has expanded eligibility for record-sealing to include more nonviolent offenses.
Meanwhile, classroom controversies are making headlines on two fronts. A former Canton City Schools career tech instructor must pay $6,215 after using district funds to restore his personal vehicle under the guise of "program promotion." In a more alarming development, two 18-year-olds at Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility face felony charges after allegedly attacking their shop teacher with the very mallet he was demonstrating in class, sending the instructor to the hospital.

🔄 Second chances arrive for those with criminal records in Canton. The Greater Stark County Urban League has launched an expungement program to help people clear low-level convictions. The initiative covers court filing fees, provides transportation assistance, and offers free legal coordination for those navigating the six-to-nine-month expungement process. Thanks to Ohio Senate Bill 288, more nonviolent offenses can now be sealed after waiting periods ranging from six months to three years, depending on the offense severity. "This program is about unlocking opportunity," said Thomas E. West, Urban League president, emphasizing the importance of helping individuals move forward free from past mistakes.
🔧 Former teacher owes $6,215 for restoring his personal car with school funds. Todd Hoover, a Canton City Schools career tech instructor, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft after using $11,501.99 of district money to restore his 2004 Subaru Baja. While Hoover claimed the vehicle was used to promote the autobody technology program at school events, he later traded it in for $8,000. He has already repaid $5,286.18 through court-ordered restitution and a separation agreement, but his attorney says he won't pay the remaining balance.
🔨 Two teens attack shop teacher with mallet at juvenile facility. The State Highway Patrol reports the pair attacked the teacher with the same tool he was demonstrating in class. The injured instructor required hospital treatment following the incident. Both suspects have been transferred from the juvenile facility to Stark County jail with bond set at $100,000 each.
