🚪 Open door policy

Stark County • March 25, 2025

Good morning, Stark County. Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference. Just ask Canton's 8th Ward residents, who are celebrating both major infrastructure improvements and those smaller fixes that truly enhance daily life. As Councilman Richard Sacco points out, while Cleveland Avenue repaving projects make headlines, it's often attention to details like community island landscaping that wins residents' hearts. Meanwhile, imagination runs wild in Massillon where children recently stepped through the looking glass into a whimsical Mad Hatter Tea Party complete with teacup painting, croquet, and visits from the Queen of Hearts herself.

A significant shift is underway at Canton City Schools, where after years of closed doors, students from any district will soon be welcomed through open enrollment. The policy reversal comes as Superintendent Jeffery Talbert reconsidered the benefits of allowing outside students to access district programs. With applications opening this spring and enrollment limits based on capacity, this change could reshape educational opportunities across the region—giving families new choices while potentially bringing hundreds of students back into the district.

🏙️ Canton's small fixes make big impacts for residents. Councilman Richard Sacco praises city departments for their quick responses to minor neighborhood issues alongside major infrastructure projects. The 8th Ward will see waterlines installed in the Montabella neighborhood to nourish landscaping in community islands. While Cleveland Avenue repaving and storm sewer projects represent larger initiatives, Sacco notes it's often attention to smaller concerns that most satisfies constituents.

🏫 Canton City Schools opens doors to students from any district. After years of turning away non-residents, the district will accept open enrollment students beginning in the 2024-25 school year. Superintendent Jeffery Talbert, who was initially skeptical, changed his mind after weighing the benefits of allowing outside students to access the district's programs. Currently, over 300 Canton City students attend other districts, while approximately 3,000 attend non-public or charter schools. Officials will establish an application process with enrollment limits based on class size and building capacity, with applications opening in late April or early May.
