Good morning, Stark County. Behind the headlines of every community lie stories that reflect our shared humanity. The tragic conclusion to Chara Medlock's disappearance reminds us of the devastating impact of addiction, as the 32-year-old Canton woman's cause of death was determined to be an accidental overdose. Her story stands in stark contrast to the creative joy emerging at Canton's Cultural Center Gallery, where animals from the Akron Zoo are demonstrating unexpected artistic talents through "Wonderfully Wild," a free exhibition opening April 8 that showcases everything from animal-created paintings to sculptures made from recycled materials.
Meanwhile, one of America's most divisive topics takes center stage at Malone University's Brehme Conference Center this Thursday. "Guns in America and the Church" brings together diverse voices including Rev. Joyce Penfield and gun-rights advocate Jim Irvine for a thoughtful exploration of Christian perspectives on firearms. This free public forum offers residents a rare opportunity to engage with complex issues through a lens of faith rather than just politics—a refreshing approach in today's polarized climate.

💔 Missing Canton woman died from accidental drug overdose. Chara Medlock's body was found in January, a month after her death, in the basement of a Canal Winchester home. The Franklin County coroner discovered a mix of fentanyl, morphine, and xylazine in the 32-year-old's system with no signs of trauma. Darrell Carter, 33, who lived in the house and had been in a relationship with Medlock, faces charges of abuse of a corpse. Both Medlock and Carter had been staying at the residence where her remains were discovered.
🔫 Malone University tackles gun debate with church perspective forum. The free public event on "Guns in America and the Church" will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in Canton's Brehme Conference Center. Participants include Rev. Joyce Penfield from Peace Builders Academy and Jim Irvine, a gun-rights advocate from FASTER Saves Lives. The discussion will explore Christian perspectives on gun ownership and violence, with political science professor David Beer moderating. Registration is available online for those interested in attending this thought-provoking conversation.
🎨 Animals unleash their artistic talents in Canton exhibition. "Wonderfully Wild: Art By & For Animals" showcases artwork created by both Akron Zoo staff and the animals themselves. The free exhibition, a collaboration between ArtsinStark and the Akron Zoo, opens April 8 at the Cultural Center Gallery in downtown Canton. Visitors can view paintings made by animal ambassadors, sculptures from recycled materials, and even a jaguar's play toy transformed into an artistic piece. The show represents a unique intersection of art, nature and enrichment, running through May 11.
