Good morning, Scioto County. The Tri-State skies will soon light up with the region's most spectacular fireworks as Independence Day celebrations take shape. Coal Grove's Family Fun Days returns with two days of festivities on July 2-3, while South Point's Party in the Park on July 5 promises everything from food trucks to dog shows before launching what's billed as the biggest fireworks display in the Tri-State area—a collaborative effort spanning three states across the Ohio River.

Meanwhile, two important pieces of local history gained recognition as Appalachian Freedom Heritage markers were unveiled at Ironton's Quinn Chapel AME and the Campbell House. These Underground Railroad sites are now part of a 27-location heritage tour spanning three states, preserving crucial stories of courage while promoting cultural tourism. In decidedly less dignified news, local law enforcement is searching for an unusual suspect—a caped man wearing only underwear who broke into a Dollar General specifically to steal women's lingerie.

The markers are part of a larger initiative spanning 27 locations across Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky that will comprise the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour. Both sites sheltered people escaping slavery, with the Campbell House built by abolitionist John Campbell in 1850 and Quinn Chapel established in 1856 as Ironton's first Black church.
