Good morning, Ross County. Activists donning skull masks made a striking statement at City Hall this week, demanding action on a toxic groundwater plume from the former Wear-Ever factory. While the visual protest certainly grabbed attention, Mayor Feeney offered some reassurance, noting the contamination is two miles from drinking water wells. The environmental concerns come as Chillicothe also prepares for a different kind of battle — one featuring trumpets and drums instead of protest signs.
The soundtrack of local pride will echo across Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center this Thursday as nine marching bands compete in the 17th Annual Battle of the Bands. Chillicothe High School enters as the two-time defending champion, while Unioto hopes to reclaim their former glory. Meanwhile, on the gridiron, Zane Trace's Pioneers have already claimed victory, with running back Brice Johnson delivering a jaw-dropping performance in their 49-13 demolition of Waverly.

☠️ Skull-faced activists demand action on toxic groundwater plume in Chillicothe. Protesters gathered at City Hall to raise awareness about pollution from the former Wear-Ever factory that closed in the 1990s. The contamination issue gained attention after the Pixelle paper mill shutdown redirected industrial chemicals in groundwater. Activists Stephanie Renner and Jamie Brown urged council members to pressure Howmet and H.I.G. to address the pollution. Mayor Feeney clarified that the contamination plume is two miles away from the city's drinking water wells.
🎵 High school bands battle for glory in 17-year tradition. Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center will host nine local marching bands at its 17th Annual Battle of the Bands on September 5th. Chillicothe High School enters as the two-time defending champion, while former winner Unioto hopes to reclaim the title after back-to-back second-place finishes. The competition, which begins at 9:30am, invites Pickaway-Ross students to vote for their favorite performance, with the winner receiving a traveling trophy. Community members are welcome to attend with their own lawn chairs at the main campus in Chillicothe.
🏈 Zane Trace Pioneers demolish Waverly Tigers in stunning 49-13 victory. The Pioneers dominated from kickoff, breaking Waverly's historical advantage in the series. Running back Brice Johnson was unstoppable, rushing for 217 yards and scoring five touchdowns, including a spectacular 56-yard run. Zane Trace's defense proved equally impressive, forcing three turnovers against a Waverly team that lost its top offensive weapons to graduation last season. Both teams will return to action next Friday as the undefeated Pioneers host Amanda-Clearcreek while Waverly seeks its first win against Unioto.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
