The Chillicothe VA Medical Center is preparing for its third annual memorial 5K run, bringing together veterans and residents to remember those lost while fostering unity on the scenic VA grounds. The event will feature powerful perspectives from both the VA Fire Chief and a Navy Veteran who witnessed the aftermath in New York firsthand.
Meanwhile, local authorities had their hands full during a busy weekend crime spree, tackling everything from vehicle theft to drug possession across multiple incidents. On a more concerning note, Chillicothe faces a developing environmental challenge as Pixelle's paper mill closure threatens to disrupt the containment of "forever chemicals" in local groundwater. Mayor Feeney is actively pursuing answers about why cleanup wasn't mandated decades ago.

🏃♂️ Chillicothe VA honors 9/11 with memorial 5K run. The third annual event, scheduled for September 11, brings together veterans, staff, and community members to remember those lost in the 2001 attacks. The day will feature an opening ceremony with speeches from the VA Fire Chief and a Navy Veteran who was stationed in New York during the attacks. Taking place on the scenic grounds of the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, the route will be fully supported with water and first aid stations. Participants of all abilities are welcome to join this day of remembrance and unity.
🚓 Chillicothe police tackle crime spree in single weekend. Officers responded to multiple incidents on August 30, including drug possession, vehicle theft, and domestic disputes. A stolen vehicle was recovered on North Bridge Street, where police also found Schedule I or II substances. At Walmart, authorities handled a shoplifting case involving both theft by deception and drug possession. Additional calls included a missing person report, a disorderly conduct citation, and a criminal trespass complaint.
🏭 Chillicothe faces dual crisis as paper mill closes and pollution spreads. Mayor Luke Feeney briefed the city council on Pixelle's shutdown and its connection to the Wear-Ever "forever chemicals" groundwater contamination. The paper mill's high-capacity wells have been containing industrial toxins from spreading southeast, raising concerns about pollution movement once operations cease. While Pixelle's owner remains largely silent about closure plans, the Ohio EPA is pushing Howmet to do more than just monitor the pollution. Feeney has scheduled meetings with environmental officials to determine why cleanup wasn't required decades ago.
