Ross County • August 28, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. Tragedy struck our community twice this week as both a police shooting and a head-on collision left multiple people injured and two lives lost. In the early hours of Wednesday, an incident on East Main Street resulted in injuries to both an officer and a civilian, with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation now leading the case. Tuesday's crash on State Route 104 claimed the lives of Harold Smith Jr. and Amber Aills when their vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a state trooper's cruiser before catching fire.
Meanwhile, a glimmer of hope remains for the historic Pixelle paper mill as potential buyers continue negotiations, potentially saving the facility from permanent closure. Support systems have ramped up for laid-off workers, with job fairs successfully connecting hundreds to new opportunities. The next round of layoffs will affect nearly 180 employees, leaving fewer than 50 at the site while decision-makers contemplate the future of the 462-acre property.

π Historic paper mill's fate hangs in balance as buyers circle. Pixelle's Chillicothe paper mill shutdown decision has been delayed beyond the expected timeframe as two or three potential buyers undergo extended vetting. Meanwhile, support systems are ramping up for laid-off workers, with job fairs processing hundreds of former employees and connecting them to new opportunities. The response team is exploring brownfield funds for potential environmental cleanup of the 462-acre property, with approximately $1M already allocated to the county. The next round of layoffs will affect 170-180 employees, leaving fewer than 50 workers at the historic mill.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
