Ross County • March 5, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. Move over, Grand Canyon β our own backyard treasure is stealing the national spotlight! Hocking Hills State Park has joined the ranks of "The 50 Most Beautiful Places in America" according to CondΓ© Nast Traveler, cementing southeastern Ohio's status as a must-visit destination. The recognition adds to an impressive collection of accolades that has this natural wonderland outshining even Yellowstone and the Smokies in certain rankings.
While natural beauty flourishes just beyond our borders, downtown Chillicothe businesses face uncertainty as proposed roundabouts on West Water Street threaten months of construction disruption. The Cavaliers baseball team is looking to bounce back with returning pitching talent and senior leadership, while local law enforcement recently handled a serious domestic violence incident resulting in multiple charges. The contrasts remind us that beauty and challenges often exist side by side in our community.

ποΈ Ohio gem joins Grand Canyon on list of America's most beautiful places.Hocking Hills State Park has been recognized among "The 50 Most Beautiful Places in America" by CondΓ© Nast Traveler, highlighting its waterfalls, cliffs, forests, and the impressive 300-foot-wide Whispering Cave. This latest honor adds to the park's growing national recognition, including USA TODAY's "Best Hiking Trail" in 2024 and Forbes' "Best Places to Travel" in 2023. Beyond hiking, visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, mountain biking, stargazing, and accommodations at the newest state park lodge in Ohio. The southeastern Ohio destination beat out famous locations like Yellowstone and the Great Smoky Mountains for some of these accolades.
π§ Chillicothe businesses fear roundabouts will devastate downtown commerce. Local establishments like Ivy's are rallying against two planned roundabouts on West Water Street, warning the construction could shut down the area for over six months. The project would eliminate vital parking spaces and disrupt customer access, potentially forcing businesses already recovering from economic hardships to close permanently. Concerned owners are urging community members to email city council by March 7th to voice their concerns about the project. While intended to enhance Yoctangee Park, businesses believe the construction's negative impacts could irreparably harm downtown's character and economic vitality.
βΎ Chillicothe Cavaliers baseball team rebuilds with pitching strength for 2025. The Division III team brings back 97% of its pitching staff from an 8-19 season last year. Four-year starter and Ashland University commit Mason Brown leads the squad with impressive stats both on the mound and at the plate. Coach Tom Barr highlights the team's growth, senior leadership, and fierce competition for innings. Additional strengths include leadership and speed as the Cavaliers look to improve on last season's sectionals tournament loss.
π‘ Chillicothe man arrested after allegedly strangling girlfriend during altercation. Matthew Koon faces charges of strangulation and resisting arrest following a domestic incident at his Akron Street residence. Officers responded to multiple 911 hangups and heard a woman shouting "he was choking me, he was going to kill me" as Koon attempted to leave the scene. Police had to use a Taser after Koon refused to comply with commands and physically resisted detention. Officers noted signs of alcohol intoxication during the arrest and documented visible redness around the victim's neck.
