Good morning, Ross County. History is being made on the wrestling mats as three local female athletes—Waverly's Abby Green, Adena's Kayla Grooms, and Westfall's Savannah Holderby—have all grappled their way to state championships. Green's achievement is particularly remarkable, becoming the first Waverly wrestler to place at state last season while accumulating an impressive 1,000 career match points. Meanwhile, as spring approaches, so does Ohio's annual open burning ban, restricting outdoor fires during five key months when wildfire risks peak.
While our young athletes are pinning down success, local residents need to avoid getting pinned by increasingly sophisticated scams. Chillicothe Police Chief Ron Meyers warns that con artists are employing clever tactics, including IRS impersonation schemes demanding payment through gift cards—something the legitimate tax agency would never do. Remember, when it comes to personal information, keeping a tight grip is as important as these wrestlers' championship holds.

🤼♀️ Three local girls grapple their way to state wrestling championships. Waverly's Abby Green, Adena's Kayla Grooms, and Westfall's Savannah Holderby all qualified at Sunday's district tournament at Big Walnut High School. Green, a four-time state qualifier with 1,000 career match points, made history last season as the first Waverly and Southern Ohio Conference wrestler to place at state. Grooms is making her third state appearance, becoming the first Adena wrestler to qualify three times, while also making history alongside her brother who also qualified. Holderby secured her spot despite having to forfeit her third-place match at 145 pounds.
🔥 Ohio's seasonal open burning ban returns, affecting five key months. The restrictions prohibit outdoor burning in unincorporated areas between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. during March, April, May, October, and November. Officials cite high wildfire danger during these periods when plants haven't turned green in spring or when dry leaves accumulate in fall. Beyond the seasonal ban, Ohio permanently prohibits burning food waste, animals, and materials containing rubber, grease, asphalt or petroleum products. Proper burn barrels must be used during legal burning hours outside the restricted times.
🚨 Scammers are targeting Chillicothe residents with sophisticated tricks. Police Chief Ron Meyers warns about IRS scams where callers demand payment through gift cards or PayPal—something the real IRS never does. He advises residents to never share personal information like social security numbers over the phone and to use secure web browsers with proper malware protection. Meyers also cautions against showing bills to door-to-door visitors as they contain personal information that could lead to identity theft. If money has been lost to a scam, residents should report it to local police immediately.
