Basketball brilliance is shining brightly across our community as Unioto's Milee Smith claims the Division III Player of the Year crown, leading a parade of local talent receiving Southeast District honors. The accolades extend beyond just one team, with standouts from Zane Trace, Southeastern, and numerous other schools earning well-deserved recognition for their exceptional performances on the hardwood.

Beyond the basketball courts, the Chillicothe Gazette is opening new doors for community voices with their innovative submission initiative, giving residents a direct pipeline to share local happenings. Meanwhile, a Ross County Marine veteran stands resolute against policy challenges affecting transgender individuals, embodying the determination that runs deep in our community. From athletic achievements to civic engagement, our county continues to showcase both talent and tenacity.

🏀 Unioto's Milee Smith crowned Division III Player of the Year. The standout basketball player received the prestigious honor from the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association's All-Southeast District selections. Several of Smith's Unioto teammates also earned recognition, including Mya Hamilton (first team), Magnolia Holbert (third team), and Keyairah Beard (special mention). In Division IV, Fairfield Union's Christian Thompson took Player of the Year honors, while Division V saw Portsmouth's Sienna Allen claim the title. Numerous local players across all divisions were recognized for their outstanding performances on the court.

🏀 Southeast District honors top high school basketball talent with all-star selections. Unioto's Blake Fitch, Zane Trace's Gunnar McCullough, and Southeastern's Lane Williams earned first team nods in their respective divisions. The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association recognized standouts across Divisions III through VI, with players from Chillicothe, Westfall, Waverly, Piketon, Paint Valley, Huntington, and Adena also making the lists. Alex Mullinnex initially felt defeated after Trump's election but quickly resolved to fight back against policies targeting transgender individuals. Trump's executive orders banning trans people from military service and women's sports have deeply concerned the Ross County resident. Mullinnex particularly worries about the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programming, questioning "If you take away DEI, who's going to be left?"   • An intoxicated individual was arrested for creating a risk of harm due to disorderly conduct. The Chillicothe Police Department responded to this incident, and the person remains in custody.

  • Another person was taken into custody for illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia. This arrest was made by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who ensures our roads are safe.

  • A suspect was arrested for multiple charges, including possessing drug abuse instruments and theft without consent. The Chillicothe Police Department handled this case, and the individual is in custody.

  • An individual was arrested for violating a protection order, garnering attention from the Ross County Sheriff's Office. The person is currently in custody.

Anna Roberta Young

Anna Roberta (Fletcher) Young, age 93, passed away on March 1, 2025, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Born in 1931 in Danville, Illinois, she was known for her exceptional sewing and quilting skills, and also enjoyed baking, making jelly, and gardening. Roberta was a member of Quinn Chapel AME Church after moving to Ohio in 2009 from Danville, where she had been a member of Allen Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie and granddaughter Cynthia, and is survived by her three children, five grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives.
