Preble County • June 26, 2025
Good morning, Preble County. Independence Day is approaching with a bang in West Alexandria, where the July 4th Party in the Park promises to transform Peace Park into a celebration hub complete with vendors, food trucks, and culminating in a lighted parade and fireworks display. The festivities don't stop there – from the American Legion's pork chop dinner to line dancing sessions and library activities, our community calendar is bursting with summer energy that captures the essence of small-town America at its finest.
Meanwhile, historic buildings are getting fresh starts across our region thanks to $4.5 million in state tax credits. The vacant Sears building in Trotwood will soon house the Funk Music Hall of Fame as part of a mixed-use revival, while Dayton's Air City Garage undergoes a $14.7 million transformation. Closer to home, Wayne County is bridging education and workforce needs with a new director position designed to expand learning opportunities for high school students – innovations that strengthen both our present and future.

🏗️ Historic buildings get $4.5 million lifeline for major transformations. The state of Ohio has awarded tax credits to renovate the vacant Sears building in Trotwood and the Air City Garage in downtown Dayton. The Sears project will receive $2.53 million to convert the 147,000-square-foot former mall anchor into a mixed-use hub featuring a food hall, business incubator, and the Funk Music Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, Cincinnati-based Model Group plans to spend $14.7 million renovating the Air City Garage with $2 million in tax credits, creating parking for their planned 220-unit housing development in the nearby Centre City building. Both projects aim to breathe new life into historic structures that have sat vacant for years.
🏭 Wayne County creates new role to bridge schools and workplaces. The Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with six local school districts to establish a director of employer engagement position. This new role will focus on expanding work-based learning opportunities for students in grades 9-12, helping them meet Indiana's new diploma requirements while building a talent pipeline for local employers. The initiative emerged from months of collaboration between educational leaders and follows Indiana's revamped high school diploma requirements designed to boost college enrollment while developing work-ready skills. All six county school districts will contribute funding and resources to support this model program.
