🪧 Signs of change

Preble County • April 10, 2025

Good morning, Preble County. The temperature isn't the only thing heating up in Oxford this season. More than 100 community members—from schoolchildren to retirees—gathered at Memorial Park this weekend in one of many nationwide demonstrations against current administration policies. With signs addressing everything from healthcare to education, the diverse crowd highlighted growing concerns about partisanship and funding cuts, with another event already scheduled for April 19.

In legal circles, a pit bull bite at Rural King has escalated to the Indiana appeals court, where judges will determine whether a dog owner bears responsibility when her pet injures someone while in another person's care. And amid enrollment challenges, Miami University is taking bold action to preserve language education by consolidating programs into a comprehensive "World Languages and Cultures" major—a creative solution that mirrors how humanities departments nationwide are adapting to survive in today's educational landscape.

🐶 Pit bull bite at Rural King sparks legal battle. An Indiana appeals court will hear arguments in Richmond after a worker sued a dog owner for negligence. Peggy McElhany was bitten while working at Rural King by Elizabeth Jordan's pit bull, which was being handled by Jordan's romantic partner. A lower court granted Jordan summary judgment, ruling she wasn't liable since she wasn't present and lacked knowledge of any vicious tendencies. McElhany argues genuine issues of material fact exist regarding Jordan's knowledge of the dog's propensity and her negligence in allowing it in public.

🌍 Miami's foreign language programs adapt to survive despite challenges. The university is replacing individual language majors with a new "World Languages and Cultures" program after enrollment declines threatened their existence. Faculty spent a year designing this future-proof major that will accommodate both language immersion students and those interested in cultural studies. Despite government funding cuts and limited career opportunities for language students, professors remain committed to providing quality education. This transformation represents how humanities departments nationwide must evolve to prove their worth in today's scrutinized higher education landscape.
