Pike County • July 28, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. Beneath the streets of Chillicothe lies a hidden challenge as officials address a toxic plume contained by the soon-to-close Pixelle paper mill. While authorities assure residents there's no immediate threat to drinking water—with contaminated groundwater trapped 28 feet underground—the Ohio EPA is implementing monitoring and remediation plans to manage these cancer-causing chemicals from a former cookware factory site.
Summer traditions continue despite environmental concerns, with local 4-H members Addison Fisher and Ruby Satterfield creating lasting memories at Canter Cave camp through archery, swimming, and outdoor adventures. Meanwhile, Ohio University Chillicothe is fostering community wellness with its new Campus Jaunt 5K, launching August 8. This monthly event invites participants of all abilities to walk, run or simply enjoy the scenic campus—reflecting the university's commitment to health and togetherness in our community.

☣️ Toxic plume trapped by closing paper mill threatens Ohio community. Chillicothe's Pixelle plant, shuttering in August, has been containing cancer-causing chemicals underground from a former cookware factory. Officials insist there's no immediate danger to residents' drinking water, as the contaminated groundwater is 28 feet underground in a localized area. The Ohio EPA is requiring monitoring wells and remediation plans from Howmet Aerospace, the responsible party for the WearEver site. Mayor Luke Feeney reassures residents that authorities have the situation under control through ongoing monitoring efforts.
🏕️ Young 4-H members create summer memories at Canter Cave camp. Addison Fisher and Ruby Satterfield from Marshal Jr. Farmers 4-H Club recently participated in Beginners Camp at Canter's Cave in Jackson County. The annual week-long camp offers a variety of outdoor activities including archery, swimming, fishing, crafting, hiking, and boating. Both girls enjoyed making new friends while learning about the outdoors through fun educational experiences. The camp welcomes both 4-H members and non-members to participate in its programs.
