🚣 River revelations

Muskingum County • March 7, 2025

Good morning, Muskingum County. First-degree felony charges don't typically make for uplifting news, but they do signal that local law enforcement is making headway against drug trafficking operations. Christopher Smith's recent arrest on South Whitewoman Street marks another chapter in ongoing efforts to address substance abuse issues that affect communities across Ohio – a reminder that behind every police report lies a complex web of public health and safety concerns.

As the Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority searches for leadership capable of filling Matt Abbott's $300-million-project-sized shoes, outdoor enthusiasts have something exciting on the horizon. The Walhonding River is poised to become the watershed's final major stream to receive State Water Trail designation, with seven accessible entry points already welcoming paddlers. From Skip's Landing's beautiful landscaping to convenient ice cream stops at Dari-Land in Warsaw, this 24-mile waterway offers both adventure and a refreshing reminder of our region's natural treasures.

🏢 Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority hunts for new leadership after Abbott's exit. The organization has received nine resumes so far but will keep applications open until they find the right candidate. They're seeking someone with strong economic development knowledge and familiarity with the local business community. Former director Matt Abbott, who resigned to become President of Southeast Ohio Economic Development, leaves behind an impressive legacy including the $300-million AMG project and development of the National Road Business Park. While the board hopes to fill the position quickly, they emphasize finding the perfect fit is more important than speed.

🛶 The Walhonding River offers seven accessible entry points for paddlers. This 24-mile stream in Ohio is seeking State Water Trail designation from the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, which would make it the last major stream in the watershed to receive this status. Some access points have already been upgraded, including the impressive Killbuck-Walhonding access and Skip's Landing with its beautiful landscaping. Along the route, paddlers can find amenities like Dari-Land in Warsaw for ice cream breaks and Lake Park for camping. When designated, the Walhonding will join the Mohican, Kokosing, Tuscarawas and Muskingum rivers as official water trails.
