👶 Midwifery meets tech

Muskingum County • March 3, 2025

Good morning, Muskingum County. There's something deeply reassuring about technology that helps bring new life safely into the world. The Maternal & Child Health Center's new handheld ultrasound device represents exactly that kind of progress – a $4,800 investment that will allow certified nurse midwife Amanda Poorman to monitor babies throughout pregnancy right here in our community, continuing the center's 50-year mission of eliminating health disparities for local women and children.

Meanwhile, history buffs will appreciate this slice of serendipity: when the Newark Arcade opened its doors on June 7, 1909, with daily orchestra concerts and 20 diverse businesses, it couldn't have timed its debut better. Just one week later, thousands of Civil War veterans flooded downtown for Ohio's annual encampment, turning those patriotically-decorated new shops into instant success stories. Today, as Zanesville prepares for everything from pizza shop changes to "Yappy Hour" pet fundraisers, our community continues writing its own colorful history.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🔊 Local health center gets ultrasound upgrade for prenatal care. The Coshocton Foundation awarded nearly $4,800 to the Maternal & Child Health Center for a handheld ultrasound device with printer. This new equipment allows certified nurse midwife Amanda Poorman to monitor babies' health status throughout pregnancy, improving care for local women. While patients will still receive specialized ultrasounds and delivery services at Knox Community Hospital, the handheld device enables timely evaluation of fetal development and detection of potential issues. The center, a United Way community partner since 1972, aims to eliminate health disparities and improve birth outcomes for women and children.

🏛️ Newark Arcade's 1909 grand opening coincided perfectly with a massive event. The historic shopping center debuted on June 7, 1909, welcoming visitors with daily orchestra concerts and over 20 diverse businesses. Just one week later, thousands of Civil War veterans and their families flooded downtown Newark for the annual Ohio encampment. The arcade merchants, with their newly opened shops decorated in patriotic bunting, enjoyed a profitable week serving the crowds. After experiencing ups and downs over the decades, the arcade has been restored to become a downtown jewel.

🏀 Basketball Scoreboard (Boys)

Catholic Central crushed Bishop Rosecrans 56-37 in a defensive masterclass that pushed the Crusaders to an impressive 22-3 record. The Bishops, now 17-7, had no answer for the Steubenville squad's stifling defense in Saturday's non-league showdown. March Madness might be approaching for the college ranks, but these Crusaders are conducting their own holy war on the hardwood.
