🎵 Melodic traditions

Muskingum County • March 4, 2025

Good morning, Muskingum County. The halls of Central Trinity United Methodist Church will soon echo with the diverse sounds of Muskingum University's talented musicians. Sixty-five performers across six ensembles will bring their day-long tour to a grand finale on March 6, showcasing everything from choral harmonies to the tropical rhythms of steel drums. It's a reminder that even in our digital age, there's nothing quite like experiencing live music that connects us to our community.

Meanwhile, a striking agricultural transformation has reshaped our county over the past century. Where once over 12,000 dairy cows dotted our landscape in 1924, just 700 remain today – though they're producing five times more milk per cow. As this dairy chapter evolves alongside a looming parole hearing for a convicted murderer from the early 90s, we're witnessing how both our rural traditions and justice system continue to adapt with the passing decades.

🐄 Muskingum County's dairy farms have dwindled dramatically over a century. Milk cow numbers plummeted from 12,455 in 1924 to just 700 today, though production per cow increased fivefold from 437 to 2,500 gallons annually. Once the county's largest agricultural income source until 1955, dairy now ranks fourth behind poultry, cattle, and hogs. Despite fewer farms, remaining operations stay competitive through improved breeding, nutrition, facilities, and innovative technology that enhances efficiency and production.
