Muskingum County • February 28, 2025
Good morning, Muskingum County. After 26 years of preserving local history and delighting over 50,000 visitors, the Buckeye Lake Museum is writing its final chapter this Friday. Like the last turn of the Queen of the Lake III's paddlewheel, this closure marks the end of an era that has kept our region's rich maritime heritage alive through stories, artifacts, and that magnificent 88-foot sternwheeler.
Yet even as one chapter closes, another inspiring story unfolds in our community. Leondra Davis, who traded St. Paul for Coshocton in 2006, is breaking barriers and building bridges as our family dependency treatment court coordinator. Meanwhile, we bid farewell to Pat Mathias, whose 70-year dedication to her local card club and masterful seamstress skills wove her deeply into the fabric of our community. Some legacies, it seems, never truly fade.

🏛️ Historic Buckeye Lake Museum faces final curtain after 26-year run. The beloved institution, which has attracted over 50,000 visitors since 1998, will close its doors this Friday due to declining volunteers and funding shortages. The closure includes selling the property's historic log cabin - the village's oldest structure - and the 88-foot Queen of the Lake III sternwheeler tour boat. Museum director J-me Braig cited minimal support from local organizations and the devastating impact of both the lake's lowering and COVID-19. While community groups scramble for last-minute solutions, plans are underway to preserve artifacts by returning them to donors or relocating them to regional museums.
🤝 Black leader breaks barriers in small-town Ohio through service and faith. Leondra Davis, who moved from St. Paul to Coshocton in 2006, serves as the family dependency treatment court coordinator while juggling six children and numerous community board positions. As a Black woman in a predominantly white community, she faced cultural adjustments but found residents welcoming and open. Davis focuses on making impact through her work and faith rather than her identity. Her community service spans mental health, recovery, and family initiatives, helping her feel truly connected to her adopted hometown.
🕊️ Beloved Coshocton seamstress and community pillar Pat Mathias dies at 89. The lifelong Ohio resident, known for her exceptional sewing skills and ability to craft anything, passed away peacefully at home on February 25, 2025. A dedicated member of multiple community organizations, including the Moose, Eagles, and Canal Lewisville Methodist Church, Pat maintained an impressive 70-year commitment to her local card club. She leaves behind a loving legacy that includes sons Brett and Brad, siblings, and multiple generations of grandchildren. Her husband Adrian and two sons, Brian and Bart, preceded her in death.
The Bishop Rosecrans Bishops turned the River Pilots' ship around in a commanding 60-37 non-league victory, proving defense wins championships - or at least Wednesday night games. The win pushes the Bishops to an impressive 17-6 record as they sail toward a showdown with the red-hot Catholic Central Crusaders (20-3) this Saturday.
