🍺 Brewed in a pickle

Muskingum County • February 27, 2025

Good morning, Muskingum County. Here's a number that might make you do a double-take: $292,000. That's how much the innovative Wooly Pig Farm Brewery invested in solar panels, only to have their federal funding suddenly frozen faster than a pint glass in winter. The sustainable farm-to-glass operation, known for its Bavarian brews and wooly Mangalica pigs, now finds itself in an unexpected financial pickle.

In brighter news, there's hope on the horizon for our four-legged friends. The new partnership between Coshocton County Animal Shelter and AlterClinic is making pet care more accessible than ever, with spay and neuter services starting at just $65. And yes, they'll even pick up your furry friend for a mere $5 - about the cost of that craft beer you might be sipping while reading this.

🌞 Rural Ohio brewery's solar dreams shattered by federal funding freeze. The Wooly Pig Farm Brewery, a sustainable farm-to-glass operation in Coshocton County, is facing financial uncertainty after their promised $146,000 federal grant was suddenly frozen. Owners Jael Malenke and Kevin Ely had already installed a $292,000 solar array, expecting the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) to cover half the cost. The innovative brewery, known for its Bavarian-style beers and wooly Mangalica pigs, now must shoulder the entire cost while waiting for Washington to potentially unfreeze the funds. The solar project would have slashed their $20,000 annual energy bill and powered 14 local homes with excess energy.
