📍 Trailblazing creativity

Meigs County • February 18, 2025

Good morning, Meigs County. Here's a number that might make your head spin: 1,444 miles. That's the length of Ohio's epic Buckeye Trail, a blue-blazed behemoth that forms one giant loop through our state's most spectacular scenery. While adventurer Andy Niekamp conquered it in 88 days, the rest of us can now explore it virtually through ODNR's new "Buckeye Trail Anywhere" program - perfect for those days when the couch feels more appealing than a hiking boot.

Meanwhile, downtown Marietta is lighting up with new energy as the historic Peoples Bank Theatre unveils its dazzling digital marquee, while in Parkersburg, tiny artists are getting their hands messy at free "Arty Parties." From trail blazes to theater lights to finger paintings, our corner of Ohio is serving up quite the creative feast this week.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🥾 Ohio's epic 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail connects 100 communities in one giant loop. The trail, marked by distinctive blue blazes, winds through 17 counties from Lake Erie to Cincinnati, passing historical sites like Native American earthworks and canal systems. Andy Niekamp completed the first solo thru-hike in 88 days, while others like Sarah Howard are tackling it section by section. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently launched "Buckeye Trail Anywhere," a virtual guide for those unable to hike physically. The trail is now being considered for National Scenic Trail designation, which would boost funding and protection.

🎭 Historic Marietta theater unveils dazzling digital marquee makeover. The Peoples Bank Theatre celebrated the installation of its new digital display and knife board during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by dozens of local officials and patrons. The upgrade, which showcases upcoming acts like Amy Grant and Pat Benatar, transforms the theater's visibility on Putnam Street. Originally opened in 1919 as the Hippodrome Colony Theatre, the venue was revived in 2016 after closing in the mid-1980s. The new marquee represents the culmination of decades of community effort and includes state-of-the-art sound system improvements.
