🌙 Lights out dilemma

Good morning, Marion County. From dawn to dusk, Columbus's beverage scene is evolving with Endeavor Brewing & Spirits' latest venture—Barrel & Bloom. This innovative concept transforms from coffee haven by day to craft beer destination by night, continuing the "brewstillery's" expansion that began in 2017. Meanwhile, a culinary success story unfolds at Katalina's, where founder Kathleen Day turned her signature pancake balls into a Columbus institution, pioneering "five-star food in a diner atmosphere" when the city's dining scene lacked middle ground.

Not all local stories have such satisfying conclusions. In South Linden, Wayne Mason's quest for alley illumination ended unexpectedly when city workers removed the "unauthorized" light fixture instead of activating it. While the Division of Power maintains nearby alley lights, budget constraints and infrastructure challenges prevent new installations—leaving Mason concerned about safety and property values as darkness falls behind his home.

☕ Columbus brewery adds coffee to its boozy lineup. Endeavor Brewing & Spirits is launching Barrel & Bloom, a new concept that will serve coffee by day and craft beer by night. The establishment will occupy the former Random Precision Brewing space on West Dublin Granville Road. While an official grand opening date hasn't been announced yet, the company has invited customers to follow their Facebook page for updates. Endeavor, which opened its original "brewstillery" in 2017, continues to expand its beverage empire in the Columbus area.

🥞 Pancake balls turned a tiny gas station into a Columbus food icon. Kathleen Day, founder of Katalina's, reflects on her 15-year journey from fashion writer to restaurant entrepreneur. Starting in 2010 during a recession, she pioneered "five-star food in a diner atmosphere" when Columbus mainly offered fast food or formal dining. Her small café became an early LGBTQ+ hangout before rainbow corporate teams dominated Pride. Now with three locations, Day continues serving local goodness despite uncertain times and rising food costs.

💡 One man's fight for alley light ends in darkness. Wayne Mason's months-long battle to illuminate the alley behind his South Linden home took an unexpected turn when city workers removed the fixture instead of activating it. Columbus officials explained the light was "unauthorized," illegally installed on an AEP pole with residential-grade wiring that posed a safety hazard. While the Division of Power maintains three nearby alley lights, they can't add new ones due to budget constraints and congested infrastructure. Mason argues the darkness creates safety concerns that affect his property value.
