Good morning, Marion County. The numbers tell a sobering story at Hilliard Food Pantry Plus, where nearly 500 families now seek weekly assistance—a sharp increase that coincides with a 50% reduction in produce supplies. Yet even amid these challenges, community spirit shines through as local students helped collect food and over $800 in donations during the Fourth of July parade, while pantry manager Jessica Deem maintains, "We're not panicking."
Healthcare access expands with Mount Carmel Dublin's impressive new 35-acre campus, bringing 300 jobs and comprehensive medical services to Northwest Columbus. Meanwhile, Marion's first Black Ohio Historical Marker now stands in Martin Luther King Jr. Park, telling powerful stories of forced exodus and resilience. During the unveiling ceremony, which coincided with the Black Joy Summerfest, community leaders emphasized the marker's importance in educating residents about chapters of local history that deserve both recognition and reflection.

🥫 Ohio food pantry battles crisis as demand soars and funding dwindles. The Hilliard Food Pantry Plus now serves nearly 500 families weekly, up from 400 earlier this year, while facing a 50% reduction in produce supplies due to budget cuts. To combat these challenges, the pantry joined Hilliard's Fourth of July parade, collecting food and over $800 in donations with help from local student volunteers. Despite Ohio's newly approved budget including a 23% reduction in food purchase programs, pantry manager Jessica Deem remains resilient, stating, "We're not panicking."
🏥 Northwest Columbus gets new healthcare hub with Mount Carmel Dublin. The 35-acre campus opened in April, offering both inpatient and outpatient services including an emergency department and intensive care unit. With 60 hospital beds, 14 ER beds, and four operating rooms, the facility will create up to 300 jobs when fully staffed. The 241,035-square-foot medical complex includes offices for primary care and specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, and gastroenterology. This expansion is part of Mount Carmel Health System's strategy to serve the projected population growth in the Dublin area.
🏛️ Marion unveils first Black Ohio Historical Marker, confronting painful past. The marker in Martin Luther King Jr. Park tells two significant stories of Marion's Black history: the forced exodus of Black residents from the West Side and the later development of "Shantytown" after World War II. During the unveiling ceremony, Marion Voices co-founder Johnnie Jackson expressed hope that the marker would educate the community about its history, while fellow co-founder Jess Lamar Reece Holler challenged residents to consider "what does it mean that this happened here?" Local officials, including Mayor Bill Collins, attended the event which was part of the larger Black Joy Summerfest celebration.
