Good morning, Marion County. Fifty feet beneath Columbus streets, a massive engineering marvel just completed a three-mile underground journey years in the making. The $247 million Lower Olentangy Tunnel boring machine has finished carving its path to Tuttle Park, creating infrastructure that will help keep our waterways cleaner during heavy rains. While we won't see the finished project until 2026, this hidden achievement represents one of the region's most significant environmental investments in decades.

Above ground, Ohio's agricultural connections continue expanding globally with the state's soybean farmers securing promising new markets in Vietnam. The recently signed agreement opens doors for Marion County producers just as growing season approaches. Meanwhile, on campus, the controversial Salmon P. Chase Center prepares to welcome its first students this fall amid ongoing debate about its mission and funding—a reminder that even educational institutions reflect our community's diverse perspectives on knowledge and learning.

🚇 Massive tunnel boring machine completes three-mile journey under Columbus. The $247 million Lower Olentangy Tunnel project reached a milestone yesterday when the boring machine arrived at Tuttle Park after years of digging. The tunnel, which runs 50 feet underground, will help keep the Olentangy River cleaner by diverting untreated sewage overflow during heavy rains. Although the boring is complete, work will continue until September 2026, with finishing touches including tree planting and a permeable parking lot at the Tuttle Park site. City officials are already considering extending the tunnel further north to Clintonville in the future.

🏛️ Ohio's controversial Chase Center opens amid political debate and pushback. The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture and Society, mandated by Republican state legislators to address alleged "leftist ideology" on campus, will begin offering courses this fall. Executive Director Lee Strang expects to have 10 faculty members ready to teach, though hiring processes have faced criticism for lack of transparency. Despite symbolic opposition from the University Senate and student protests, the center has secured $10 million in state funding plus a $3 million private donation. Critics worry the center represents legislative overreach into academic freedom while supporters see it as promoting intellectual diversity.

🌱 Ohio soybeans secure promising new market in Vietnam. The Ohio Soybean Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to promote trade cooperation between the regions. Vietnam, already the 13th largest consumer of U.S. soy with 1.44 million metric tons imported in 2024, offers growth potential for Ohio's agricultural exports. The agreement aims to supply Vietnam's expanding pork and aquaculture sectors while meeting increased demand for soy foods from the country's growing middle class. Logan County farmer Bill Bayliss, who signed the memorandum as OSC Chairman, called the timing perfect for providing farmers "an additional market opportunity" heading into growing season.
