Jackson County • May 20, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. A stark safety alert has been issued across Marietta as two potentially dangerous canines—a wolf-like dog and a brindle pit bull—roam the Harmar area streets. Officials are urging residents to keep their distance and immediately contact authorities at 740-376-2007 if these animals are spotted. This comes as our community also processes Friday's tragic motorcycle collision in Athens County that claimed the life of 65-year-old Clem Mace, reminding us how quickly life can change on our roadways.
Meanwhile, Parkersburg is taking monumental steps toward healthier drinking water with plans for a $21 million filtration system to remove "forever chemicals" from the water supply. The project, addressing strict EPA limits established last year, is nearing design completion with funding negotiations continuing between the utility and Chemours. This significant infrastructure investment represents a crucial step forward for regional public health, with more details to be shared at Tuesday's public meeting.

🏍️ Deadly collision claims motorcyclist's life in Athens County. A 65-year-old Harley-Davidson rider, Clem J. Mace, died Friday after striking a Honda CR-V that was turning into a private drive on Ohio 691. The car's driver, Julie Howard, 49, was treated at the scene while Mace was transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. and remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol with assistance from multiple local agencies.
💧 Parkersburg plans $21 million filter to remove forever chemicals from water. The Parkersburg Utility Board will hold a public meeting Tuesday to discuss the construction of a granular activated carbon filtration system. The project aims to remove C8, a chemical linked to thyroid cancer and birth defects that was previously used in Teflon manufacturing at the nearby Washington Works plant. While design is "98%" complete, the utility is still negotiating with Chemours (DuPont's spinoff company) over their contribution, though most costs are expected to be covered by Chemours and state loans. The new system addresses strict EPA limits of 4 parts per trillion in drinking water established last year.
