Good morning, Jackson County. Black smoke billowed over State Route 93 Wednesday as flames engulfed Dan Mercer's garage near Hamden, creating a traffic standstill that required multiple law enforcement agencies to manage. The dramatic scene forced many motorists to find alternate routes between Hamden and Wellston, as firefighters battled what they described as a "garage fire with exposures" that also damaged a pickup truck.

In a powerful display of community commitment, over 100 residents gathered Friday for Children's Memorial Flag Day, honoring those working to protect our most vulnerable. Meanwhile, education officials have raised urgent concerns about House Bill 96, warning the legislation could strip local control from school districts and potentially cost Warren Local Schools $2.5 million annually. The same meeting celebrated a bright spot: senior Julian Stadelman's remarkable achievement of 1,567 career basketball points—a new school record.
