Jackson County • March 31, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. From rubble to renewal, Parkersburg's Residential Assisted Demolition program is transforming the urban landscape one property at a time. The innovative initiative now tackling a Market Street home offers property owners a remarkable deal: free demolition of unsalvageable structures with a forgivable two-year lien that vanishes when owners either maintain the vacant lot or build anew. It's a creative solution turning eyesores into opportunities across our community.
Meanwhile, the spirit of service is alive and well as two dozen local youth ministries prepare to unite for the fourth annual Great Friday event on April 18. While middle and high schoolers gather to pack 10,000 meals for the hungry and build 20 playhouses for Habitat for Humanity, their collective impact reminds us how powerful our community becomes when we work together. The contrast couldn't be starker with news of a homeless man's unfortunate choices at the Parkersburg Soccer Club.

🏚️ Parkersburg's innovative program tears down unsalvageable homes for free. The city's Residential Assisted Demolition initiative, currently demolishing a house on Market Street, allows property owners to voluntarily remove structures beyond rehabilitation. Development Director Ryan Barber explained that the city covers all demolition costs while placing a two-year forgivable lien on the property. This lien is removed if owners either maintain the vacant lot without code violations or build a new home on the site. Jimmie Harper Construction is handling the current demolition at 1303 Market Street.
