🀝 Community resilience

Jackson County • March 28, 2025

Good morning, Jackson County. When community bonds face challenges, remarkable things happen. The swift creation of the "We Rally & We Rise Women's Conference" stands as powerful testament to this reality. After Ohio University's sudden cancellation of its annual women's celebration, local leaders pivoted with impressive speed, gathering 300 attendees and preserving the original event's spirit despite the political tensions that threatened to silence it.

Elsewhere in our community, connections continue to strengthen in meaningful ways. Business owner Misti Sims has formalized a partnership with Williamstown Elementary, discovering that supporting student growth doesn't always require financial contributions but rather sharing experiences and resources. And as we reflect on these community bonds, we also pause to remember James Whitlatch II, whose life journey of 72 years included a half-century marriage, a love of classic cars, and the simple joys of golfing and fishing before his passing this week.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ¦° Politics cancels Women's History Month celebration, community rallies back. After Ohio University abruptly canceled its annual "Celebrate Women" conference citing federal anti-discrimination guidance, local women quickly organized an independent replacement event. Within days, the "We Rally & We Rise Women's Conference" brought together 300 attendees in Lancaster, Ohio with many original sponsors shifting their support. The cancellation reflects broader tensions around DEI initiatives under the Trump administration, which has led to similar removals of women's and minority achievements from government websites. Despite differing political views, attendees united around the sentiment that women's contributions should be celebrated regardless of politics.

🏫 Local business owner partners with elementary school to enrich student lives. Misti Sims, founder of Little Black Dress Events and Rentals, signed an agreement to become Williamstown Elementary's newest Partner In Education. The partnership, facilitated by the Chamber of Commerce of the Mid-Ohio Valley, aims to support student growth and deepen community connections. Sims, whose son previously attended the school, was initially hesitant because she thought partners needed to make large financial contributions. However, Principal Cumpston emphasized that partnerships are about bringing community resources and experiences to students from all backgrounds, not just writing checks.
