Jackson County • February 17, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. In the span of a single day, our community experienced both heartbreak and triumph, reminding us how quickly life can pivot from sorrow to celebration. While we mourn the loss of Larry Martin in Friday's tragic Route 50 accident, another group of Jackson County residents was making history in a very different way - with four young speedsters from Gallia Academy blazing their way into the record books as All-Americans.
Meanwhile, Wellston finds itself at a crossroads as city leaders contemplate a major shift in emergency services. The proposed dispatch consolidation with Jackson County has sparked considerable debate, proving once again that even in our digital age, the way we handle emergency calls remains as crucial as ever to our community's safety and peace of mind.

π₯ Elderly driver dies in head-on collision with garbage truck. The tragic accident occurred Friday morning on U.S. Route 50 near McArthur, Ohio, when 81-year-old Larry Martin lost control of his Nissan. Martin's vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Rumpke trash truck driven by 21-year-old Austin Wogan, who escaped uninjured. The crash forced a two-and-a-half hour closure of Route 50 while multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
πββοΈ Small-town Ohio relay team sprints into history books with All-American status. The Gallia Academy 4x100 team of Hunter Shamblin, Hudson Shamblin, Parker Burris, and Bradyn Simmons blazed to a seventh-place finish at the 2024 Ohio State Track Meet. Their impressive time of 42.80 seconds marked a significant milestone for the Blue Devils program. The achievement makes them the first Gallia Academy relay team to reach the podium since 2011, bringing national recognition to their small Ohio school.
π¨ Wellston weighs major shift in emergency dispatch services. The Ohio city is considering a contract with Jackson County to handle all emergency dispatching, which would eliminate current dispatcher positions at the Wellston City Building. The proposal emerged through Resolution No. 2025-03 during a January city council meeting. Though initially introduced for a first reading, the resolution was later withdrawn for further consideration. The potential change marks a significant shift in how the city would manage its emergency response system.
