Jackson County • February 14, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. January's numbers are in from our sheriff's office, and they paint quite a picture of life in small-town America. While most of us were recovering from holiday festivities, our deputies were clocking enough miles to drive from here to California and back - over 5,300 to be exact - all while handling everything from medical emergencies to wayward vehicles in need of impounding.
Mother Nature seems determined to keep our emergency responders just as busy in February, with winter storms turning our tri-state region into a snow globe. As Meigs and Gallia counties declare snow emergencies, the Lady Vikings are heating things up indoors, dominating Wellston with back-to-back victories that would make even the most seasoned basketball fans take notice.

π Vinton County Sheriff's Office logs busy January with nearly 400 emergency calls. The department's monthly activity report shows deputies responded to 152 EMS calls and 47 fire-related incidents, while managing 385 total 9-1-1 calls. Officers racked up over 5,300 miles conducting 82 prisoner transports and created 80 new case files. The department consumed nearly 1,700 gallons of fuel while handling 424 incidents, including 16 accidents and three vehicle impounds.
βοΈ Winter storms trigger emergency alerts across Ohio and West Virginia counties. Meigs County has declared a Level Two snow emergency while neighboring Gallia County issued a Level One alert due to hazardous road conditions. Sheriff Fitch has urged residents to limit travel to essential trips only. Multiple school districts, including Gallia Local, Gallipolis City, Meigs Local, Eastern, and Southern, have announced two-hour delays. The winter weather impacts have also extended into West Virginia, with Mason County schools implementing delays.
π Lady Vikings dominate Wellston in impressive 64-25 conference victory. Vinton County secured a season sweep against their TVC-Ohio Division rivals, following up Wednesday's 68-31 win with another commanding performance on Wellston's Senior Night. The back-to-back victories improved the Lady Vikings' record to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The team's resurgence shows promise as they work to reclaim their former glory in the TVC-Ohio Division, where they once held a dominant position.
Warren's defense put on a masterclass, holding Jackson to just 22 points in a commanding 42-22 victory that wasn't as close as the scoreboard suggests (and the scoreboard suggests it wasn't close at all). The Warriors improved to 10-11 on the season, proving that sometimes the best offense is a defense that makes the other team look like they're shooting at a kiddie hoop with a beach ball.
