Geauga County • April 30, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. Spring has officially arrived in Northeast Ohio, and with it comes a blossoming of outdoor activities that celebrate our natural surroundings. From learning Mandarin names for native wildflowers during a bilingual nature walk at Big Creek Park to spotting feathered friends at three different parks during "Birding for Beginners" sessions, our county parks are offering delightful ways to reconnect with nature after our long winter hibernation.
The celebration of our relationship with the natural world extends beyond flora and fauna to include our four-legged companions. Lake Metroparks Farmpark's upcoming Horsefest showcases the historical importance and enduring bond between humans and horses through demonstrations, breed displays, and family activities. Whether you're interested in seeing a mare and foal up close or watching skilled riders demonstrate their craft, this two-day May event offers a perfect opportunity to appreciate these magnificent animals that have shaped human history.

🌸 Bilingual nature walk bridges Chinese language and Ohio wildflowers. Naturalist Chris Mentrek will lead the annual Chinese/English Wildflower Walk at Big Creek Park on May 10. The one-hour event invites participants to discover Ohio's native spring flora while learning Mandarin Chinese vocabulary. No registration is required for this less-than-two-mile excursion starting from the Meyer Center. "Gaining familiarity with foreign-language names for local wildflowers is a great opportunity to learn more about them," explains Mentrek.
🦅 Bird enthusiasts can join free guided walks in Geauga parks. The Geauga Park District is hosting "Birding for Beginners" sessions in May at three different locations: Veterans Legacy Woods, Observatory Park, and Eldon Russell Park. These two-hour, slow-paced walks will teach newcomers the basics of bird identification with help from experienced leaders. No registration is required, and participants should dress for the weather. Binoculars will be available to borrow for those who don't have their own.
🐴 Horsefest gallops back to Lake Metroparks Farmpark this May. The two-day celebration showcases why horses have been essential for transportation, entertainment, farming, and companionship throughout history. Visitors can watch riders of all ages demonstrate their skills and the special bond between horse and rider, while also enjoying displays of various horse breeds including the popular mare and foal moments. The family-friendly event offers pony rides for $6, children's activities, and much more to explore. Horsefest takes place May 17-18, 2025, with admission ranging from $7-$9 depending on age.
