Geauga County • April 25, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. The sweet legacy of maple syrup runs generations deep in our community, as evidenced by Curt Johnson's induction into the Maple Syrup Hall of Fameβnearly 65 years after his father presented syrup to JFK. With a record-breaking 150 attendees and 139 contest entries, this year's celebration highlights how deeply our maple tradition is rooted in local identity, culminating in the upcoming festival where visitors can taste what judges called "near perfect" syrup despite this season's rollercoaster weather.
While some residents honor tradition, others are creating new community connections. Chardon Middle School's Builders Club recently delivered 330 paper towel rolls to Rescue Village, demonstrating youth commitment to animal welfare. Nature lovers can join the April 27 tobacco litter cleanup at The West Woods, combining environmental stewardship with social connection. And for families with Scouts, the park district's special badge-earning days offer perfect opportunities to embrace the outdoors while building skills that last a lifetime.

π³ Geauga parks need volunteers to clean up tobacco litter. A community clean-up event on April 27 will bring together Geauga Park District, Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers, and University Hospitals to remove tobacco products from local parks. Participants will meet at The West Woods for an introduction before heading to different parks, then reunite for a wrap-up and food. The park district is also offering nature journaling sessions in May and June, plus special Scout Days where Webelos, Junior Girl Scouts, Tiger Cubs, and Brownies can earn badges through outdoor activities.
