📚 Library lifelines

Geauga County • April 9, 2025

Good morning, Geauga County. A staggering $100 million funding cut looms over Ohio libraries, threatening institutions that welcome over half a million Geauga County visitors annually. House Bill 96 would roll library budgets back to 1998 levels—a time when Google was just launching and smartphones didn't exist—potentially jeopardizing everything from children's storytimes to homebound delivery services for seniors who rely on these vital community hubs.

While one community cornerstone faces uncertainty, another celebrates a milestone. The Perennial Gardeners of Chesterland marks 75 years with their annual plant sale extravaganza on May 10, offering everything from native perennials to herbs. Meanwhile, as Painesville prepares to transform the long-vacant Harvey High School site into townhouses, passionate alumni are advocating for a permanent memorial that honors the nearly 150 years of community history cultivated on those grounds—a reminder that some roots deserve to be preserved.

📚 Ohio libraries face devastating $100M funding cut proposal. House Bill 96 would slash library budgets to 25-year-old levels, threatening programs that serve over 500,000 annual Geauga County visitors. The bill would also require libraries to restrict LGBTQ+ materials from minors' view, contradicting librarians' commitment to intellectual freedom. Geauga County Public Library relies on state funding for 33% of its operations, potentially impacting services from children's storytimes to senior homebound delivery. "Every age group, every demographic, every income bracket is served by our library," said Executive Director Kris Carroll.

🏫 Historic Harvey High School site deserves a permanent tribute. After sitting vacant for 15 years, the former Harvey High School property in Painesville will be developed into townhouses. Chris Lillstrung, a 1998 Harvey graduate, argues passionately that the site—which served as a community hub for nearly 150 years—should include a permanent memorial acknowledging its significance. He suggests a marker, kiosk, or artwork that honors the generations of students and memories made at 167 West Washington Street. While embracing progress, Lillstrung believes the legacy of this hallowed ground deserves recognition rather than being erased from community memory.
