🏠 Renovation ripples

Geauga County • April 8, 2025

Good morning, Geauga County. Sixty years ago, two Lakewood mothers searching for support for their sons planted a seed that has blossomed into something remarkable. That seed—HELP Foundation—just unveiled a stunning $2 million renovation to its Lakewood facility, creating bright, modern spaces that will enhance services for hundreds of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Northeast Ohio. The March 27th ribbon-cutting ceremony marked not just an expansion, but six decades of life-changing community impact.

Meanwhile, fiscal tensions are easing in Euclid as the city and school district near resolution on their $8 million tax dispute, with the city agreeing to nearly double its income tax revenue sharing with local schools. And in the tranquil streets of Hunting Valley, even an open garage door warrants police attention—a charming reminder of the community's typically peaceful nature where minor incidents dominate the police blotter.

The expanded facility, which celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 27th, marks the organization's 60th anniversary of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1965 by two Lakewood mothers seeking support for their sons, HELP has grown into a leading organization serving more than 600 adults across Northeast Ohio through residential, vocational, and employment assistance programs. The renovated space features bright, modern multi-use areas including classrooms, meeting rooms, and an expansive kitchen that will enhance services for approximately 100 people. Funding for the project came from multiple sources including family funds, foundations, and Key Bank.

💰 Euclid and school district end bitter $8 million tax dispute. The city has agreed to nearly double the income tax revenue it shares with Euclid City Schools from residents working outside the city. This settlement resolves a lawsuit filed in January 2024, where the school board sought over $8 million in unpaid tax collections dating back to 2019. Under the new agreement, the city will pay the district 30% of income tax revenue collected from residents working elsewhere, up from the previous 16% rate. Both the city council and school board are expected to approve the deal this week, ending years of contention over a 1994 tax measure.

🚨 Alert officer spots open garage door in sleepy Hunting Valley. The incident, which turned out to be a returning homeowner, was one of several minor calls handled by local police during early April. Other incidents included assisting with a warrant notification from Elyria PD, helping Pepper Pike with a gas leak, responding to reports of an unwanted solicitor, and attempting to locate a reckless driver. The police blotter highlights the typically quiet nature of this affluent Ohio community where open garage doors warrant police attention.
