Gallia County • August 29, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. The rich heritage of river culture takes center stage this weekend as sternwheelers line up along the riverfront for Point Pleasant's Tribute to the River. The event, dedicated to the late Ed Lowe—whose camera captured the heart and soul of Mason County for nearly three decades—offers everything from live music by "Appalachian Lightning" to family activities that celebrate our region's deep connection to the waterways that shaped our communities.
In more somber news, the community remembers Jonathon Robert Chanti, whose kind spirit touched many before his peaceful passing at 69. Meanwhile, on the athletic front, Rio Grande's volleyball team faces challenges after dropping two matches at the OnSet Invitational in Michigan, despite standout performances from Taylor Bartrum and Kelli Stewart. The 4-4 RedStorm will look to bounce back when they face Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.

🚢 Sternwheelers line up for Point Pleasant's Tribute to the River. The weekend event at Riverfront Park begins Friday with music from "Appalachian Lightning" and continues Saturday with memorial services, awards, and family activities. This year's tribute is dedicated to the late Ed Lowe, a beloved community photographer who captured Mason County events for nearly 30 years after arriving in 1995. Lowe, who passed away last July, was recognized for his artistic photography and dedicated service to Main Street Point Pleasant and the River Museum. "Blue Moves" will close the festivities with music Saturday evening.
🏐 RedStorm volleyball team drops two matches in Michigan showdown. The University of Rio Grande women's team suffered defeats against unbeaten Spring Arbor (25-13, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24) and 15th-ranked Aquinas College (25-22, 25-17, 25-12) at the OnSet Invitational in Fort Wayne. Despite standout performances from Taylor Bartrum and Kelli Stewart against Spring Arbor, Rio Grande struggled with a .094 attack percentage compared to their opponents' .254. The RedStorm showed improved hitting against Aquinas but couldn't match the Saints' sizzling .343 mark. Now sitting at 4-4 for the season, Rio Grande will look to snap their three-game losing streak when they face 14th-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
