Gallia County • July 1, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. Behind every construction payment and infrastructure project lies a community's commitment to its future. The county commissioners' recent approval of the final $35,792 jail payment alongside substantial investments in the Green Sewer Phase 2 project represents more than budget decisions—it's building tomorrow's foundation today. These infrastructure improvements join other meaningful developments taking root across our region.
From concrete foundations to matters of the heart, our community shows its true character in how we honor those who've left lasting impressions. The touching motorcade tribute for Speedy Bonecutter—Point Pleasant's beloved "Great White Hunter"—reminds us that authentic connections transcend first impressions. Similarly, Toyota's new 55-tree memorial orchard honors fallen service members while promising literal fruits of remembrance for schools and senior centers, creating spaces where healing and community nourishment grow together.

🏢 Gallia County approves $35,792 final jail payment amid infrastructure push. Commissioners unanimously approved the payment to Granger Construction for work on the county jail during their regular Thursday session. They also greenlit several disbursements for the Green Sewer Phase 2 project, including a significant $467,381 payment, along with additional funds totaling over $183,000 from settlement and USDA sources. The sewer initiative represents a major infrastructure effort to expand and improve systems in Green Township, building upon a 2021 construction loan of $463,617 approved through the Ohio Water Development Authority. The commission also handled routine business and rescheduled their July 10 meeting to July 9.
🎖️ A small town mourns its beloved "Great White Hunter" Speedy Bonecutter. The 66-year-old Point Pleasant icon, known for his camouflage attire and imaginary "elephant hunts" on Main Street, was honored with a motorcade through downtown following his death on June 19. Though initially intimidating with his distinctive appearance and habits, courthouse employees and residents came to cherish Bonecutter's sweet nature and childlike enthusiasm. Despite appearing solitary, he formed meaningful connections with community members who looked beyond his quirky exterior to discover his gentle soul and humor.
🍎 Toyota plants apple orchard to honor fallen post-9/11 service members. The 55-tree memorial at Toyota's Buffalo, West Virginia plant was created in collaboration with Gold Star Mothers and the state's Department of Agriculture. Each tree represents one of West Virginia's counties, with dog tags bearing names of fallen service members placed by attendees. As the orchard grows, community members will be able to pick apples, with harvests donated to local schools and senior centers. Toyota hopes the freely accessible orchard will provide a place of healing for families of fallen service members.
