Gallia County • June 20, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. Champions are walking among us this week as track stars from Point Pleasant and Wahama High Schools received well-deserved recognition from county officials. These athletic achievements mirror the broader excellence being celebrated throughout our region, with Mason County itself earning "County of the Year" honors from the state commissioners association—proving that greatness extends beyond the track and into our civic institutions.
The summer season is hitting its stride with a symphony of community celebrations. The nationally acclaimed Lafayette Bicentennial Celebration has put Gallipolis on the cultural map, while the Hot Summer Nights Concert Series brings melodies to the riverfront. Meanwhile, a Gallipolis police officer's quick action saved an infant's life at a local store—a powerful reminder that sometimes our community heroes wear badges instead of track medals.

The Point Pleasant High School boys track team was honored for winning the Class AA State Championship during Wednesday's county commission meeting. Individual state champions Hannah Baker of PPHS and Trace Simpkins of Wahama High School were also commended for their achievements. In other business, commissioners learned Mason County had been named County of the Year by the County Commissioners Association of West Virginia and considered a $20,000 opioid settlement fund request from the Facing Hunger Foodbank. Updates on courthouse improvements were also discussed, including the need for alternate funding for a backup generator.
