Fayette County • July 8, 2025
Good morning, Fayette County. Behind Ohio's troubling fifth-worst unemployment rate lies a stark economic reality check. Despite years of corporate incentives and tax breaks costing billions, the state's 4.9% jobless rate trails only Nevada, Michigan, California, and Kentuckyβwith employment growth lagging nearly nine percentage points behind the national average. These numbers tell a sobering story about economic policies that haven't delivered their promised results for many working families.
Law enforcement had their hands full in neighboring Highland County, where deputies responded to everything from menacing incidents to weapons charges. The busy day reflects in the county jail's current 57-inmate count. Meanwhile, the court system delivered justice in a significant drug case, sending 56-year-old Kristine Kinnison to prison for 54 months after she pled guilty to methamphetamine trafficking. Judge Rocky Coss cited her "ongoing criminal history" when rejecting her attorney's request to delay sentencing until after treatment.

π Ohio's unemployment rate ranks fifth-worst in the nation. The state tied with Rhode Island at 4.9% in May, trailing only Nevada, Michigan, California, and Kentucky according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The LLC tax break, costing Ohio $1 billion annually, has mainly benefited the top 7% of earners while showing little evidence of job creation. Meanwhile, JobsOhio has spent over $1 billion in incentives for corporations, yet the state's employment growth lags nearly nine percentage points behind the national average.

Several other arrests occurred, including charges for driving under suspension, weapon possession while intoxicated, and resisting arrest. A domestic dispute call on Hickory Trail was resolved when parties agreed to separate after what was determined to be only a verbal altercation. The county jail currently houses 57 inmates, while emergency services responded to 187 total calls during the reporting period.
